Application Procedure at University of Vienna
Application for Start WS 2012 will open in March 2012!
According to the Austrian law all students, who fulfill the admission criteria, are eligible for registering as MEi:CogSci students. In order to assess your qualification for the MEi:CogSci master programme we ask you to follow the application procedure as stated below.
All deadlines & dates concern the application for the current calendar year.
The application procedure consists of three phases:
1. Pre-Application Phase
Expression of Interest
During that phase you are asked to provide the documents as stated below in order to assess your qualification for the MEi:CogSci programme.
Please send the following documents to the MEi:CogSci Study Programme Coordinator:
- Download and fill in the MEi:CogSci application form (in English) → Application Form
- Bachelor-Certificate (or Letter of Reference from supervisor stating that you will receive your Bachelor degree by the end of September of this year)
- Transcript of Records (Sammelzeugnis)
- Copy of your passport
- Proof of English proficiency
- Letter of Reference (optional)
- Statement of Admission (not all students need to provide this document. Please check the Studentpoint pages to find out, whether you need to provide this document)
Imortant note: Please be aware that secondary education diplomas (bachelor/master certificate), transcript of records and the proof of the special university entrance qualification (admission statement) need to be presented in an officially legalised form for the admission procedure, unless they were issued in Austria. Copies have to be legalised, too. Please check the different criteria for legalisation at the Studenpoint info pages on legalisation and translation issues.
Proof of English language proficiency (preliminary conditions – upon approval by rectorate)
Applicants who are not native speakers of English must demonstrate English proficiency (on B2 level or higher) by either:
- obtaining acceptable results in an internationally recognized test (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English) or
- proof of higher education in English or
- proof of residence of reasonable length (1 year) in an English-speaking country or
- school leaving examination (Matura/Abitur) in English (min. 4 years of English in school) or
- language skills may also be evaluated during personal interviews of selected candidates.

This Expression of Interest also serves as application for the Seminar „Introduction to Cognitive Science I“ (see below).
August 1st: Feedback on your Expression of Interest
You will receive a feedback giving you advice whether you are qualified for the programme or not. The decision is based on your Letter of Motivation and the discipline of your Bachelor degree.
2. Application procedure for the Seminar „Introduction to Cognitive Science I“
All students are required to pass the seminar “Introduction to Cognitive Science I” in order to successfully continue the MEi:CogSci master programme. Participation in this seminar is both a necessary requirement for graduating the MEi:CogSci programme and a pre-requisite for other courses during the following semesters in the curriculum. Students are selected according to the following rules for this seminar:
- The didactical design of the seminar requires an equal distribution of representatives of the core disciplines of cognitive science. Hence, students will be chosen according to the discipline of their Bachelor degree and their Letter of Motivation.
- 25 students will be accepted for the course. The rest of eligible students will be put on a disciplinarily organised waiting list.
By applying for the MEi:CogSci program (see above) you automatically apply for this seminar as well.
August 5th: Nomination of the Participants of the seminar
You will receive a notification whether you are accepted for the seminar or not or whether you are put on the waiting list.
Beginning of October: Final Nomination of Participants
In case you are accepted for the seminar you are required to attend the first meeting of this seminar (the dates will be announced on these www-pages)!
If you do not show up, you will loose your place in the seminar. Students from the waiting list as well as students who applied after the pre-application deadline will be accepted for the vacant places according to the position on the waiting list.
3. Admission at the University of Vienna
Registration at the University of Vienna
For a successful application for the MEi:CogSci programme you have to register at the University of Vienna.
Co-Registration at Medical University of Vienna (MUW)
As considerable parts of the curriculum are offered by the Medical University of Vienna you are required to co-register (“Mitbelegen”) there. You can find further information on Co-registration here.
Please be aware that you have to prolong your co-registration at the MUW every semester.
